Once upon a time there was a legend Tender written declarations on paper or softly whispered words; when it comes to Valentine’s Day, hearts express their desires and passions are unveiled, just like in the West. But what is the origin of this celebration in China? Seven fairies were bathing, when Niulang, a teasing young cowherd, stole their clothes.
Zinu, the most beautiful, took a chance and ran stark naked to get them back. Having been seen thus, she couldn’t refuse marriage. Fortunately, she fell in love and thus lived contentedly with her companion, until the goddess of the heavens saw that a mere mortal had married a fairy. She was infuriated and decided to use her hairpin to cut a large river across the heavens that would separate them forever. However, once a year, all the magpies in the world get together and make a bridge above a milky way so that for one night, Qiqiao Jie’s night, the lovers are reunited.
