Although the differences between geeks and hipsters can be vague or less than opaque, each group is made up of people with sincerely different mindsets, goals and interests.
A geek is concerned with discussing her or his interests in an effort to actually promote technology, movies, music and games that he or she considers to be the best. Hipsters, on the other hand, is preoccupied with appearing simultaneously ironic and rebellious to what they consider to be societal norms; that being the case, hipsters, when talking about their interests, are stereotyped as the type of people who will briefly mention a band, food, clothing label or other product and, instead of promoting it, will often add the phrase, "you've probably never heard of [it], though."
Even with the disparities between hipsters and geeks, differentiating between the two is still relatively difficult. Use the following infographic as a guide the next time you are not sure if someone you know is a geek or a hipster.
